The aim of the present dissertation is to try and understand the interventions in the barns known as palheiros in Vale do Chão da Ribeira, located in the parish of Seixal in Madeira. This concern arose from the opportunity to intervene in one of the barns still found in its original state. So, the case study presents itself as part of the intervention that may be carried out on the landscape. It became evident that the reconstructed barns were totally stripped of the original features both architecturally and environmentally due to their divergences of scale and constructive programming. Consequently, The Municipal Territorial Plan sufficed as the basis for this research, in order to understand the structural features of the landscape. As Vale do Chão da Ribeira is considered a Humanized Landscape to be Protected by the Municipal Master Plan, the main aim is to establish a strategy that allows for sustainable development of the territory through recognition and the appropriate use of its value. With this in mind, it aims to foster strategic thinking about the way of building in Chão da Ribeira using constructive landscape intervention adapted to existing heritage and contemporary needs and expectations, combined with the agriculture and practice of outdoor activities that take place in the mountains embracing the Valley.
