Resumo: The article corresponds to the opening conference held on July 6, 2017 at the seminar on Health Regulation that took place in the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT) of the New University of Lisbon.  The text unfolds in four parts.  The first one distinguishes between economic regulation, technical regulation and competition regulation. Next, the specificities that involve the regulation of health are analysed. In the third part, the institutional models of regulation are examined, namely the institutional model of regulation of health in Portugal, which is carefully taken in attention.  The article ends by raising some of the (new) challenges that the Health Regulatory Entity in Portugal will face in the future.

De seguida são analisadas as especificidades que envolvem a regulação da saúde.
