Serão considerados os efeitos desses compostos no processo de envelhecimento da pele, pelos seus efeitos antioxidante e anti-hiperpigmentação, os mecanismos de ação e algumas questões toxicológicas potencialmente associadas.A Vitis vinifera foi selecionada por ser uma matéria-prima vegetal com uma ampla utilização testemunhada, tanto em número de produtos existentes no mercado, havendo registo da existência de mais de 500 formulações cosméticas contendo derivados desta planta, como pela antiguidade do seu uso. O Arbutus unedo foi selecionado por ser uma espécie vegetal autóctone no território nacional com potencialidades para utilização em cosméticos.A avaliação foi suportada numa revisão de literatura, incluindo livros e artigos científicos recolhidos em bases de dados tais como a Biblioteca do Conhecimento On-line (B-On) e a PubMed. Os conteúdos selecionados tiveram em conta a evidência de suporte à utilização dos compostos referidos em cosméticos, bem como o mecanismo de ação das principais substâncias ativas. Foram também considerados os conteúdos relativos à segurança na utilização.O estudo permitiu confirmar que o resveratrol atua como antioxidante e tem a capacidade de inibir diversos mecanismos relacionados com o envelhecimento da pele, impedindo o envelhecimento precoce e reduzindo as manchas hiperpigmentares, sinais visíveis do envelhecimento. Demonstra-se, também que a arbutina pode ser útil no combate às manchas hiperpigmentares por ser um inibidor da tirosinase, podendo ser utilizada com vista ao branqueamento cutâneo.Palavras-chave: “Vitis vinifera”, “resveratrol”, “Arbutus unedo”, “arbutina”, “envelhecimento da pele” e “antienvelhecimento da pele”. This study aims to assess the properties of natural compounds isolated from Vitis vinifera, specifically the resveratrol, and from Arbutus unedo, with special emphasis on the arbutin. This assessment was made taking into account the interest of these compounds in their use in cosmetic products, active as protector against facial skin aging. The effects of these compounds on the aging process, through antioxidant activity and anti-hyperpigmentation, the mechanisms of action, as well as some potentially associated toxicological issues were considered.Vitis vinifera was selected, due to the wide use of this raw-material for cosmetic formulations, testified both, by the the number of products on market and with records on the existence of more than 500 cosmetic formulations containing derivatives of this plant and its long period of use. Arbutus unedo was also selected since it is an indigenous species in the Portuguese national territory, with potential for use in cosmetics.This assessment was made through a literature revision, including books and scientific articles collected from databases such as the Online Knowledge Library (B-On) and PubMed. The selected contents took into account the evidence which supports the use of these compounds in cosmetics, as well as the mechanism of action of the main active substances. Safety issues regarding their in their use were also considered. Data allowed to confirm that resveratrol acts as an antioxidant able to inhibit various mechanisms related to skin aging, preventing premature aging and reducing hyperpigmental blemishes, signs of aging clearly visible. As for arbutin, it has been shown that the substance is applicable to restrain skin hyperpigmentation throughout the tyrosinase inhibition.
