Resumo: Since young age that our relation with monsters begins: fear of the dark, the unknown, the loneliness. We imagine what we can’t understand and that can be frightful. The sensation of fear is a way for our body to warn us about danger situations, physical or emotional. Monstrous creatures, some with human appearance, other hybrids, appeared described in graeco-roman mythology. The Sphinxes, with lion body and human face, protected the egypcian temples, supernatural creatures haunted North America’s natives and demonic spirits “oni” made part of the Japanese tradition. In Middle Age medieval Europe was filled with fantastic stories about fire breathing dragons and giants who ate men. Authors of fables, fairy tales, traditional and moralist tales tried, over the years, to describe to children, young and adult people, in a simple and objective way, the meaning of fear and how to face it. Psychoanalyst Bruno Bettelheim dedicated himself to the study of fairy tales and what impact they would have on children’s lives. Children identify with the characters: the loneliness, the fears and restlessness of the hero. With the wonderful legacy that writers and illustrators, Portuguese and international, have left us in this new millennium, a new approach arises in care given to illustration in children’s literature. Around the world festivals, exhibitions and conferences are organized, where the best authors and artists/illustrators are awarded. Currently, in Iberian Peninsula there are book publishers specialized in publications for children and young people, who are succeeding in markets across borders. Some of the most relevant are: “Planeta Tangerina”, “Pato Lógico” and “Kalandraka”. In modern children’s books the presence of humor predominates, and in this way the selected stories introduce the vision of fear, with playful monsters, demons, witches, harmless ghosts and fantastic animals that spread magic since the birth of civilization
