Self-esteem, its relationship with academic performance and university dropout

The main purpose of this article was to determine the relationship between self-esteem, academic performance and university dropout of students from second to sixth semester of the different careers of the Faculty of Pedagogy of the "Luis Vargas Torres" Technical University of Esmeraldas. For data collection, a survey was conducted on 200 students and 20 teachers, for which a data collection instrument was designed to determine the level of self-esteem, academic performance and student desertion. The results show that men, unlike women, are characterized by having less self-confidence, while women tend to solve problems more efficiently and quickly, however, there is a percentage of female students who have low self-confidence. self-esteem. Based on the above, it is proposed to design and apply strategies to enhance and strengthen self-esteem through workshops that allow comprehensive and professional development, as part of the training of students in such a way that they achieve adequate academic performance. The percentage of students who have dropped out of the different careers should also be taken into account, and the respective follow-up to determine the true causes of the dropout should be taken into account.
