Resumo: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new modality was initiated in universities, as classes were taught virtually. This caused negative effects on the mental health of nursing students, which continued when they returned to the face-to-face mode of academic formation. The objective of this research is to determine the mental health status of nursing students. The methodology implemented was a quantitative, descriptive approach, cross-sectional and non-experimental. The target population through a simple random probabilistic sampling was 101 students in the seventh semester of the Nursing Career of the Technical University of Ambato. The results show that the mental health of the students has been affected, revealing high levels of stress (64.3% of moderate, severe and extremely severe stress), depression (55.5%) and anxiety (24.8%), and there is a relationship between stress and the student's sex. Subsequently, it is evident that 27.7% are at risk of suicide. Likewise, the factors that caused stress to the students were studied, which highlighted communication with other professionals (39.6%), fear when taking theoretical tests (50.5%), the distance between the faculty and the home (38.6%) and the fear of making mistakes during patient care (54.4%). There was evidence of a problem in the mental health of the students, which generates psychological difficulties, problems in their professional training, and through this to be able to take actions to improve their health.
