“Making her great divinity resplendent”: preliminary notes on the nuances of an Akkadian verb

Resumo: This paper presents the preliminary results of a survey among the occurrences of Akkadian root, šrh, which is known as the basic verbal form šarāhu as well. This root has its main meaning connected to the semantic field of splendour and magnificence. In the Assyrian Royal Inscriptions, this root implies luminosity and visual perception, and it carries, we argue, a material meaning. Thus, there is an association between the semantic field of splendour, with connotations related to light, brightness and radiance, and a material dimension.

A raiz tem sua principal acepção dentro do campo semântico do esplendor e da magnificência. Nas Inscrições Reais Assírias, essa raiz traz implicações com a luminosidade e a experiência visual, veiculando, assim defendemos, um significado material.
