This article aims to discuss the processes of reading and writing in the steps that constitute the Methodology of Teaching-Learning-Assessment of Mathematics through Problem Solving. In order to do so, we initially discuss the concept of problem and Problem Solving as a methodology, as well as the reading, orality and writing in the teaching of Mathematics. In this context, the practices and research carried out by the Group of Studies and Research in Education and Mathematics Education are presented and discussed, especially regarding the reading and writing processes in Problem Solving, identifying the differences for a traditional teaching class. The results indicate that while initially difficult for students, reading and writing are important tools to promote understanding in mathematics.
