Resumo: The study estimated excess mortality by cause of death in Brazil and states in 2020. We estimated standardized mortality ratios considering expected deaths by the estimated trend for the previous 5 years. We observed a 19% excess in deaths in 2020 (SMR= 1.19; 95% CI= 1.18-1.20). There are differences by cause groups, highlighting infectious diseases, mental disorders, chronic cardiovascular/metabolic conditions, and external causes, in addition to ill-defined causes. There is enormous heterogeneity among Brazilian states. The excess of deaths is the result of both Covid-19 and the social response and management of the health system.

SciELO PreprintsSciELO PreprintsSciELO Preprints2022-04-13info:eu-repo/semantics/preprintinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scielo/preprint/view/392410.1590/SciELOPreprints.3924porhttps://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scielo/article/view/3924/7328Copyright (c) 2022 Raphael Mendonça Guimarães, Mariana Passos Ribeiro Pinto Basílio de Oliveira, Viviane Gomes Parreira Dutrahttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessGuimarães, Raphael MendonçaOliveira, Mariana Passos Ribeiro Pinto Basílio deDutra, Viviane Gomes Parreirareponame:SciELO Preprintsinstname:SciELOinstacron:SCI2022-04-12T17:36:02Zoai:ops.preprints.scielo.org:preprint/3924Servidor de preprintshttps://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scieloONGhttps://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scielo/oaiscielo.submission@scielo.orgopendoar:2022-04-12T17:36:02SciELO Preprints - SciELOfalse
