Introduction: Training in palliative care and the development of clinical skills for nursing professionals must be priorities to ensure safe and quality care. Objective: To analyze the perception of coordinators of higher education nursing institutions about palliative care. Methods: Qualitative, descriptive study, carried out with coordinators of nursing courses at higher education institutions in Rio Grande do Norte. Semi-structured interviews were carried out, followed by thematic content analysis. Results: Among the categories that emerged, the category “palliative care in the conception of course coordinators” was discussed, which arose from the existence of subcategories that represent the understandings, approaches and limitations presented by coordinators of higher education courses in nursing regarding care. palliatives in nursing graduation. The coordinators understand the meaning, definition and principles of palliative care, however, they reported that this knowledge was not present in their training process. The existence of weaknesses and limitations in relation to knowledge in palliative care was identified in the coordinators' speech, in addition to the fact that it is a complex and challenging topic that led to a distancing. Final considerations: The need for greater investment in the ongoing education of coordinators and teachers of higher education courses in nursing should be discussed, with a view to expanding possibilities for changes in the current context, since they occupy a reference place in the process of training the professional nurse.
