Plural paths of health care: medicalization of the symbolic

Resumo: | The possibilities of intervention in the health field are numerous and made its mark in humanity’s history. In the last centuries, health care was attributed to medicine, which, using institutional, legal, and scientific devices, became preponderant. One of the pillars of this profession is constituted in the processes of medicalization. This theoretical study aimed to problematize the hegemony of the notion of medicalization based on the Western scientific medical framework. Based on Foucauldian arguments about the attempts to standardize individuals based on the notions of health and disease intended by Western medicine, the need to consider the propositions that evoke plural therapies aimed at understanding the processes of health and illness in other perspectives are highlighted. Elaborated between two theoretical frontiers, the study firstly analyzes the historical constitution of medicine and its legitimacy as hegemonic knowledge. In sequence, we seek to blend the possibilities of intervention in the health care area, giving visibility to what Anthropology calls the medicalization of the symbolic, that encompasses the knowledge arising from the relational and affective daily life of different cultures. At the end of the trajectory, analyzes about the attempts to erase plural modes of existence undertaken from the hegemonic medicalization are encouraged, discussing the relevance of multiplying perspectives of intervention in health care to overcome this exclusivity, also considering the knowledge coming from social and cultural sources. |

En los últimos siglos, el cuidado de la salud se atribuyó a la medicina, la cual, valiéndose de dispositivos institucionales, legales y científicos, adquirió preponderancia. Uno de los pilares de esta profesión se constituye en los procesos de medicalización. Este estudio teórico tuvo como objetivo problematizar la hegemonía de la noción de medicalización a partir del marco médico-científico occidental. A partir de los argumentos foucaultianos sobre los intentos de estandarización de los sujetos a partir de las nociones de salud y enfermedad que pretende la medicina occidental, se destaca la necesidad de tener en cuenta las proposiciones que evocan terapias plurales dirigidas a comprender los procesos de salud y enfermedad en otras perspectivas. Elaborado entre dos fronteras teóricas, el estudio analiza, en primer lugar, la constitución histórica de la medicina y su legitimación como saber hegemónico. En la secuencia, buscamos matizar las posibilidades de intervención en el área de la salud, dando visibilidad a lo que la Antropología denomina la medicalización de lo simbólico, que engloba los saberes surgidos del cotidiano relacional y afectivo de las diferentes culturas. Al final de la trayectoria, se estimulan los análisis sobre los intentos de borramiento de modos de existencia plurales emprendidos desde la medicalización hegemónica, discutiéndose la pertinencia de multiplicar las perspectivas de intervención en salud para superar esta exclusividad, teniendo en cuenta también los saberes provenientes de fuentes sociales y culturales.As possibilidades de intervenção no campo da saúde são múltiplas e marcaram a história da humanidade. Nos últimos séculos, o trato da saúde foi atribuído à medicina, que, valendo-se de dispositivos institucionais, jurídicos e científicos, tornou-se preponderante. Um dos pilares dessa profissão está constituído nos processos de medicalização. O presente estudo, de cunho teórico, objetivou problematizar a hegemonia da noção de medicalização baseada no arcabouço médico-científico ocidental. A partir da argumentação foucaultiana acerca das tentativas de padronização dos sujeitos a partir das noções de saúde e de doença pretendida pela medicina ocidental, pontua-se a necessidade de levar em conta as proposições que evocam terapêuticas plurais voltadas para compreender os processos de saúde e adoecimento em outras perspectivas. Elaborado entre duas fronteiras teóricas, o estudo analisa, primeiramente, a constituição histórica da medicina e sua legitimação como saber hegemônico. Na sequência, busca-se matizar as possibilidades de intervenção na área de saúde, dando visibilidade ao que a Antropologia denomina de medicalização do simbólico, que engloba os saberes advindos do cotidiano relacional e afetivo de diferentes culturas.
