“O caminho das ervilhas”: didactic resource in the teaching of mendelian genetics

Genetics has become a highly visible area in the scientific and social context. However, it is reported in the literature the complexity of the contents and processes, linked to the lack of teaching methods. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the performance of students of Higher Education at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Piauí after the application of didactic material, “O Caminho das Ervilhas”, to the construction of learning. We used the field research, with a qualitative approach, involving 15 students from the Biological Sciences course at the Federal Institute of Piauí. As a pedagogical intervention activity, a didactic-digital game was developed to work on genetic concepts and processes. It was evident that students had difficulties in applying mathematical knowledge in solving genetic problems, in addition to demonstrating insecurity when interpreting these data. Through the intervention activity, it was noticed that the teaching methodology contributed to the students' learning. Therefore, the use of alternative methodologies in the teaching of Genetics indicates the possibility of correlating theory and practice in a playful and interactive way, in addition to developing content seen as theoretical in the teaching of Genetics.
