The subtraction approach in the Normal Primary Schools and Primary Education textbooks, at the beginning of the 20th century

Resumo: | This article discusses the subtraction approach in three books from the beginning of the 20th century: two used in primary education training teachers’ programs related to mathematics and pedagogy and the other used as textbook for primary education in Portugal. The focus is to understand the approach they presented regarding this arithmetic operation, from the mathematical and didactic point of view. For this purpose, a historical research methodology was used, through documentary analysis of primary sources. We started by analyzing what the Primary Education and Normal Education programs referred in relation to arithmetic operations, in particular subtraction, and then proceed to the analysis of each works, in the part related to the arithmetic operation subtraction. It was observed that the works present different ways of approaching subtraction, presenting different methods (compensation or decomposition). The exercises also present differences, namely in relation to the quantity. It was also found that the three works address the three situations (the case that each number is only represented by a digit, the case that all the diminisher digits are greater than the diminishing digits and in which case not all the diminishing digits are larger than those of the diminisher). |

El objetivo es comprender el enfoque que presentaron sobre esta operación aritmética, desde el punto de vista matemático y didáctico. Para ello, se utilizó una metodología de investigación histórica, a través del análisis documental de fuentes primarias. Comenzamos analizando a qué se referían los programas de Educación Primaria y Educación Normal, en relación a las operaciones aritméticas, en particular la resta, para luego proceder al análisis de cada uno de los trabajos, en la parte relativa a la operación aritmética de resta. Se observó que las obras presentan diferentes formas de abordar la resta, presentando diferentes métodos (compensación o descomposición). Los ejercicios también presentan diferencias, es decir, en relación con la cantidad. También se encontró que las tres obras abordan las tres situaciones (en cuyo caso cada número solo está representado por un dígito, en cuyo caso todos los dígitos aditivo son mayores que los dígitos del sustractivo y en cuyo caso no todos los dígitos aditivo son mayores que los del sustrativo).Este artigo discute a abordagem da subtração em três obras do início do século XX: duas usadas na formação de professores para o Ensino primário relacionadas com Matemática e Pedagogia e outra usada como manual escolar do Ensino Primário, em Portugal. Tem-se como objetivo perceber a abordagem que apresentavam relativamente a esta operação aritmética, do ponto de vista matemático e didático. Para tal foi utilizada a metodologia de investigação histórica, através da análise documental de fontes primárias. Começou-se por analisar o que referiam os programas do Ensino Primário e do Ensino Normal, relativamente às operações aritméticas, em particular a subtração para depois se proceder à análise de cada uma das obras, na parte relativa à operação aritmética subtração. Observou-se que as obras apresentam diferentes formas de abordar a subtração, apresentando diferentes métodos (compensação ou decomposição). Também os exercícios apresentam diferenças, nomeadamente em relação à quantidade.
