Resumo: The benefits of student-based teaching-learning methods seem consensual among Basic Education scholars. Therefore, there is growing concern regarding the development of pedagogical strategies that allow the implementation of active methods. Hence, we have developed a case-study type Problem-Based Learning activity in the field of Genetics to facilitate the learning of concepts and attitudinal aspects related to Blood Types. The activity included four different cases introduced during a blood-typing simulation – ABO and Rh systems. The suitability of activity was evaluated in a quali-quantitative manner, and we found that students were able to put previously-acquired knowledge to use and develop new knowledge after the discussions on the original subject as they moved forward on solving the cases. Moreover, the didactic sequence adopted allowed the introduction of the notion of Epistasis, based on one of the cases. The subject of Blood Types was strategically picked because it is part of the daily lives of students, which could potentially stir contextualized discussions on technology, society and ethics.
