Conceptions of Algebra in large scale evaluations: cases of Prova Brasil and ENEM of 2011

Summary: The present article introduces an analysis of mathematical questions that were part of two Brazilian macro evaluations in 2011: (1) “Prova Brasil” applicable for 9th graders – last years of elementary school1, and (2) “Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio”  known as ENEM – applicable for students in their last year of high school2. The first objective is to identify, in these macro-assessments, the different conceptions of algebra studied by a research group and presented as basis in this article, its prevalence and possible relations between them.  Considering  the  possibility  of  learning  expansion  of  students’  algebraic thinking along the trajectory from middle to high school, it is intended to contribute to the significance of algebraic contents as they emerge in these classrooms.

O objetivo primeiro é identificar, nessas macroavaliações, as diferentes concepções de álgebra estudadas pelo grupo de pesquisa e apresentadas como fundamentação neste artigo, sua prevalência e as possíveis relações entre elas.
