Research trends in Mathematics Education that focus on the social, cultural and political aspects of school mathematics

Resumo: | This study aims to discuss research trends in Mathematics Education that are related to the cultural, political and social dimensions of School Mathematics, making it explicit that the mathematical development has roots in the cultural and social aspects of the different social groups and practices. Methodologically speaking, this is a theoretical and bibliographical qualitative study. It is theoretically based on studies concerning Ethnomathematics, Critical Mathematics Education, and Mathematical Modeling. The role played by the mathematical language in different strata of society, be they cultural, political or social, is the main link between Ethnomathematics, Critical Mathematics Education, and Mathematical Modeling. Language is a tool used for broadening one’s world view and developing empowerment. The political relations of Ethnomathematics and Critical Mathematics Education can provoke the discussion on how the teaching of Mathematics is used for inculcating people with ideas that strengthen the formatting and often non-critical role of mathematical knowledge. |

Metodologicamente, este é um estudo teórico bibliográfico, de natureza qualitativa. Teoricamente, fundamentou-se nos estudos envolvendo a Etnomatemática, a Educação Matemática Crítica e a Modelagem Matemática. O papel desempenhado pela linguagem matemática, em diferentes estratos da sociedade, sejam eles culturais, políticos ou sociais é o principal elo entre a Etnomatemática, a Educação Matemática Crítica e a Modelagem Matemática. A linguagem é uma ferramenta utilizada tanto para a ampliação da visão de mundo, quanto para o desenvolvimento do empowerment.
