Mathematical Modeling and Differential Equations: a mapping of Mathematics Education research

Resumo: We present a mapping of scientific production in Brazil, based on theses and dissertations, which included Mathematical Modeling that employed Differential Equations. The mapping was carried out in the theses and dissertations database of the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento e Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes). To carry out this article, some guiding questions guided us: What are the objectives of these researches? Which Mathematical Modeling perspectives are adopted when they involve Differential Equations? What are the main contributions, possibilities and difficulties identified? Therefore, we carried out a systematic review, characterized as an exploratory study, of the bibliographic type, within the group of studies called “state of the art”. In addition, we verified a relative scarcity of productions in this area, and we found that there is a window of opportunity for further research on the topic addressed. The results showed the benefits of using Mathematical Modeling as a teaching strategy, as a motivation, how to get out of the usual classroom routine and how to work with real and other problems. However, there are obstacles such as the time spent on such activities and the adequacy of the curriculum. Above all, we maintain that there is a need to reflect on Mathematical Modeling in Higher Education, especially that which involves Differential Equations.

El mapeo se realizó en la base de datos de tesis y disertaciones de la Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento e Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes). Para este artículo, nos han guiado algunas preguntas orientativas: ¿Cuáles son los objetivos de esta investigación? ¿Qué perspectivas de modelización matemática se adoptan cuando se trata de ecuaciones diferenciales? ¿Cuáles son las principales aportaciones, posibilidades y dificultades identificadas? Para ello, realizamos una revisión sistemática, caracterizada como un estudio exploratorio, de tipo bibliográfico, encuadrándose en el grupo de investigaciones denominado "estado del arte". Además, verificamos una relativa escasez de producciones en esta área y constatamos que existe una ventana de oportunidad para seguir investigando con el tema abordado. Los resultados mostraron los beneficios de utilizar la Modelización Matemática como estrategia de enseñanza, como motivación, como salir de la rutina habitual del aula y como trabajar con problemas reales y otros. Sin embargo, existen obstáculos como el tiempo dedicado a estas actividades y la adecuación curricular. Por encima de todo, sostenemos que es necesario reflexionar sobre la modelización matemática en la enseñanza superior, especialmente la de las ecuaciones diferenciales.Apresentamos um mapeamento da produção científica no Brasil, baseado em teses e dissertações, as quais contemplaram a Modelagem Matemática que empregaram equações diferenciais. O mapeamento foi efetuado no banco de teses e dissertações da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento e Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes). Para realização desse artigo, algumas questões norteadoras nos guiaram: Quais são os objetivos dessas pesquisas? Quais as perspectivas de Modelagem Matemática são adotadas quando envolvem Equações Diferenciais? Quais são as principais contribuições, possibilidades e dificuldades identificadas? Para tanto, realizamos uma revisão sistemática, caracterizada como um estudo exploratório, do tipo bibliográfico, enquadrando no grupo de pesquisas denominado “estado da arte”. Além disso, verificamos uma relativa escassez de produções nessa área e constatamos que há uma janela de oportunidades para mais pesquisas com a temática abordada. Os resultados mostraram os benefícios do uso da Modelagem Matemática como estratégia de ensino, como motivação, como sair da rotina usual da sala de aula e como trabalhar com problemas reais e outros. Porém, há empecilhos como o tempo despendido em tais atividades e a adequação curricular.
