(Future) teachers’ beliefs towards Mathematics and its teaching

Resumo: The aim of the present study is to analyze a group of (future) teachers’ beliefs towards Mathematics and its teaching. The study involved students from a teacher initial education program in a public university in the state of Maranhão. It is a qualitative study and the data were collected from a questionnaire, observations and a problem resolution concerning the content of proportionality. The results show that the (future) teachers showed some beliefs that are strongly rooted concerning Mathematics and its teaching as well as the content that was discussed in the problem – proportionality, which might reflect in classroom with their (future) students. Therefore, the initial education courses should discuss and re-construct such beliefs.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar as crenças manifestadas por um grupo de (futuros) professores em relação à Matemática e seu ensino. O estudo envolveu estudantes de um programa de formação inicial de professores de uma Universidade Pública do Estado do Maranhão. Trata-se de um estudo de natureza qualitativa, e os dados foram coletados por meio de um questionário, de observações e através da resolução de um problema envolvendo o conteúdo proporcionalidade. Os resultados mostram que os (futuros) professores apresentaram algumas crenças que são fortemente enraizadas em relação à Matemática e seu ensino, assim como em relação ao conteúdo discutido no problema - proporcionalidade, que poderão se refletir em sala de aula com seus (futuros) alunos; por isso, os cursos de formação inicial deveriam discutir e (re)construir essas crenças.
