CalMe Pro — Mental calculation for teachers

Resumo: The mental calculation facilitates problem solving, develops the numerical sense, the ability to estimate, creative thinking and, independently, is a differential in facing problems. Historically, we noticed the presence of mental calculation in pedagogical manuals, teaching programs and textbooks, but we note that it is little prioritized or valued by teachers in the early years of elementary school. This devaluation may be the result of lack of knowledge to teach. As we only teach what we know, teachers who do not know mental calculation do not feel able teaching it. In this perspective, we promoted the course Mental Calculation for Teachers (CalMe Pro), whose objective was to teach mental calculation strategies to teacher, so that they, as protagonists in the classroom, star teaching students. This text reports the experience in the planning and development of the CalMe Pro course. The course showed that teachers who are confident about mental calculation, in possession of the knowledge of the strategies, their use and the way of teaching, feel motivated to insert the strategies of mental calculation in its practice and provide students with the benefits of it.

Históricamente, percibimos la presencia del cálculo mental en manuales pedagógicos, programas de enseñanza y libros de texto, pero notamos que es poco priorizado o valorado por los docentes en los primeros años de la escuela primaria. Esta devaluación puede ser el resultado de falta de conocimiento para enseñar. Como solo enseñamos lo que sabemos, los profesores que no conocen el cálculo mental no se sienten capaces de enseñarlo. En esta perspectiva, promovemos el curso Cálculo Mental para Docentes (CalMe Pro), cuyo objetivo es enseñar estrategias de cálculo mental a los docentes, para que ellos, como protagonistas de su clase de aula, comiencen a enseñar a los alumnos. Este texto relata la experiencia en la planificación y desarrollo del curso CalMe Pro. El curso ha demostrado que los docentes que tienen confianza en sus cálculos mentales, en posesión del conocimiento de las estrategias, su uso y la forma de enseñar, se sienten motivados para insertar las estrategias de cálculo mental en su práctica y proporcionar a los estudiantes los beneficios de esta.O cálculo mental facilita a resolução de problemas, desenvolve o senso numérico, a habilidade de estimar, o pensamento criativo e, de forma independente, é um diferencial no enfrentamento de problemas. Historicamente percebemos a presença do cálculo mental em manuais pedagógicos, programas de ensino e nos livros didáticos, mas notamos que é pouco priorizado ou valorizado por professores dos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental. Essa desvalorização pode ser fruto da falta de conhecimento para ensinar. Como só ensinamos o que sabemos, professores que não sabem cálculo mental não se sentem capazes de ensiná-lo. Nesta perspectiva, promovemos o curso Cálculo Mental para Professores (CalMe Pro), cujo objetivo é ensinar estratégias de cálculo mental para docentes, para que estes, como protagonistas da sala de aula, passem a ensinar os estudantes. Este texto relata a experiência no planejamento e desenvolvimento do curso CalMe Pro.
