Although environmental sustainability is a concept widely discussed in the literature, it becomes increasingly evident the rapid advancement of environmental degradation due the excessive consumption of natural resources as a result of human behavior. When the chemistry is applied of the inconsequential form is usually one of the causes of environmental degradation, but if used with responsability, may be the solution of this and many other problems. She can be an ally to environmental sustainability. Due the importance of this issue, a literature review was conducted in order to investigate how environmental sustainability is being discussed in chemistry teaching, especially in higher education. For this we performed a web search of the Higher Education Institutions offering chemistry courses in the south and southeast regions of the country. We selected the institutions federal and state public oldest. In some institutions, we enter into their sites in order to verify if these offer some discipline related to the environment and/or develops on their campi some management of chemical waste. The results of this review indicate that environmental sustainability is one of the concerns of teachers and researchers who teach in chemistry courses of these higher education institutions.
