From catharsis to the cathartic: toward a post-dramatic theory of representation

Resumo: The understanding of the notion of catharsis has been through constant theoretical debates and controversies throughout history of theater. Different perspectives were born entangled to varied social, cultural, and political contexts. The notion of catharsis related to classical tragedy, as defined by Aristotle, has since been explored by theater movements until its apparent refusal in contemporary theater, especially in the so-called post dramatic theater. This article does not aim to explore yet a new understanding of catharsis in the contemporary. Instead, it examines how experiments in post dramatic theater distance themselves from the Aristotelian notion and establish a new perspective focused on the cathartic effect, an analysis that traverses the Lacanian psychoanalysis.

Nacieron diferentes perspectivas entrelazadas con diversos contextos sociales, culturales y políticos. La noción de catarsis relacionada con la tragedia clásica, tal como la definió Aristóteles, ha sido explorada desde entonces por los movimientos teatrales hasta su aparente rechazo en el teatro contemporáneo, especialmente en el llamado teatro posdramático. Este artículo no pretende explorar una nueva comprensión de la catarsis en lo contemporáneo, sino más bien cómo las nuevas experimentaciones en el teatro posdramático se distancian de la noción aristotélica y establecen nuevas perspectivas centrándose en el efecto catártico, en un análisis que permea la psicoanálisis lacaniana.O entendimento da noção de catarse passou por constante debates teóricos e controvérsias ao longo da história do teatro, e dela foram difundidas diferentes perspectivas atreladas a interesses e contextos sociais, culturais e políticos. A noção de catarse relativa à tragédia, conforme definição de Aristóteles, tem sido então explorada pelos movimentos teatrais até a sua aparente recusa no teatro contemporâneo, em especial o chamado pós-dramático.
