Augusto Rodrigues Duarte: a clown among verses, newspapers and jokes in nineteenth-century Brazil

Resumo: Among the vast circus production in Brazil in the 19th century, the performance of clowns and, therefore, comicity had a strong presence in the shows. In this sense, this article aims to analyze part of the performance of the clown Augusto Rodrigues Duarte, accessing the multiplicity of his presentations and the mixture of expressions and techniques that he mobilized in his artistic achievements in the diverse and complex scenario of circus comedy of the period. To this end, a survey and cross-referencing of different sources was carried out, mainly 19th century newspapers that were consulted in the Hemeroteca Digital of the National Library (RJ). Thus, this study is dedicated to the professional production of Augusto R. Duarte, an artist little known by the bibliography, and to disseminate and expand the understanding of the production of comicity in the 19th century and its artists, in addition to clowns of the time already contemplated with various studies and publications.

En ese sentido, este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar y analizar parte de la actuación del payaso Augusto Rodrigues Duarte, acceder a la multiplicidad de sus presentaciones y la mezcla de expresiones y técnicas que movilizó en sus realizaciones artísticas en el diverso y complejo escenario de la comicidad circense de la época. Para eso, se realizó un levantamiento y cruce de diferentes fuentes, principalmente periódicos del siglo XIX consultados en la Hemeroteca Digital de la Biblioteca Nacional (RJ). De esta forma, este estudio se dedica a la producción de Augusto Rodrigues Duarte, artista poco conocido por la bibliografía del tema, y a difundir y ampliar la comprensión de la producción de comicidad en el siglo XIX y sus artistas más allá de los payasos de la época ya contemplados con estudios y publicaciones.Entre a vasta produção circense no Brasil do século XIX, a atuação dos palhaços e, portanto, a comicidade tinham presença marcante nos espetáculos. Nesse sentido, este artigo visa apresentar e analisar parte da atuação do palhaço Augusto Rodrigues Duarte, acessar a multiplicidade de suas apresentações e a mistura de expressões e técnicas que ele mobilizou em suas realizações artísticas no diversificado e complexo cenário da comicidade circense do período. Para tanto, realizou-se o levantamento e cruzamento de diferentes fontes, principalmente jornais oitocentistas, que foram consultados na Hemeroteca Digital da Biblioteca Nacional (RJ).
