The work aims to present the School Board as a mechanism for participation within the school. Focuses on a brief background on School Boards. The 1988 Federal Constitution, in Article 206, paragraph IV, recommends: "Democratic Management of the Public, under the law." The Ceará State Constitution, in Article 215, paragraph V, defines "Democratic Management of the educational institution under the law guaranteed the principles of participation of community representatives." The LDB, in Article 14, states: "The systems will define the rules of the democratic management of public education in basic education, according to their peculiarities and according to the following principles: participation, education professionals in the development of the education program school; II-Participation of communities and local school councils equivalent. "The creation and implementation of the School Board, as public policy of consolidation of democratic management, promotes school autonomy, involving the various segments in the school and community initiatives implemented by the school. It is relevant to this policy, collegial work, democracy and participation. From thisperspective, school autonomy and decentralization are the fundamentals of a new organization of public education. To have a democratic management in schools is essential to have suitable space for new social relationships between the various school segments may occur.
