Critical Mathematics Education: A historical look

Resumo: The aim of this article is to understand the historical development of Critical Mathematics Education. This educational perspective seeks to promote a critical and reflective view of mathematics and its use in society. To this end, the historical contributions of Critical Theory and Critical Education to the development of Critical Mathematics Education were observed, as well as the contributions of Critical Mathematics Education to the teaching and learning of mathematics. Bibliographical and descriptive research was used to develop this article. Understanding the historical contributions to the development of Critical Mathematics Education reveals the importance of grounding this approach in a critical and emancipatory perspective that values critical thinking and the active participation of students. In this way, we conclude that understanding the historical trajectory of Critical Mathematics Education contributes to understanding this perspective, encouraging discussions and practices that value critical thinking and the contextualization of mathematics, making it significant in the education of individuals.

Para tanto, foram observadas as contribuições históricas da Teoria Crítica e da Educação Crítica para o desenvolvimento da Educação Matemática Crítica, assim como as contribuições da Educação Matemática Crítica para o ensino-aprendizagem de matemática. Para o desenvolvimento deste artigo foi utilizado a pesquisa bibliográfica e descritiva.
