Cartography throughout human history: importance and technical advances

Resumo: The present article has as main focus to portray Cartography throughout the history of humanity, since cartographic representations follow history and are the first ways to represent the environment. Long before the development of language, man was already drawing in caves, on clay blocks on animal skins. Cartography has always been part of the history of mankind to represent the lived space, and is undoubtedly linked to the historical context of each era. And whether it is strategically used by the State or as a school subject, it relates to Geography to explain the realities of each society, serving to represent and explain the world. This work shows the evolution of Cartography from ancient times to contemporary times, in addition to discussing the relationship between Geography and Cartography and the history of Cartography in Brazil.

Muito antes do desenvolvimento da linguagem, o homem já desenhava nas cavernas, em blocos de argilas em peles de animais.  A Cartografia sempre fez parte da história da humanidade para representar o espaço vivido, e sem dúvida, está ligado ao contexto histórico de cada época. E quer seja estrategicamente utilizada pelo Estado ou como disciplina escolar ela se relaciona com a Geografia para explicar as realidades de cada sociedade, servindo para representar e explicar o mundo.
