Manifestations of the kitsch phenomenon in cemeteries: a brief essay on sentimentality, funerary art and death

Resumo: The bourgeoisie way of life inaugurates two important manifestations for this work: kitsch aesthetics and funerary pomp. From the mid-19th century onwards, both expressions became increasingly present in the day-to-day life of the Western culture. Here we present a problematization of the insertion of the kitsch phenomenon in cemeteries. We aim, in general, to analyze the changes and permanences in the sepulchral locus through the fads of funerary art and symbolic ensemble, until the appearance of funerary kitsch and the relationship of societies with cemeteries, expressed in the distance between being and death. Desde mediados del siglo XIX en adelante, ambas manifestaciones se hicieron cada vez más presentes en la vida cotidiana de la cultura occidental. Este ensayo presenta una problematización de la inserción del fenómeno kitsch en los cementerios. Su objetivo, en líneas generales, es analizar los cambios y las permanencias en el locus sepulcral a través de las modas del arte funerario y el conjunto simbólico, hasta la aparición del kitsch funerario y la relación de las sociedades con los cementerios, expresada en la distancia entre el ser y muerte. De meados do século XIX em diante, ambas manifestações se tornaram cada vez mais presentes no dia-a-dia da cultura ocidental. Este ensaio[1] apresenta uma problematização da inserção do fenômeno kitsch nos cemitérios. Objetiva-se, em linhas gerais, analisar as mudanças e permanências no lócus sepulcral por meio dos modismos da arte tumular e conjunto simbológico, até o aparecimento do kitsch funerário e o relacionamento das sociedades com os cemitérios, expresso no distanciamento entre o ser e a morte.
