On the Track of the Men without Shadow: a Reading of “The Fisherman and His Soul”

Resumo: This work aims at analyzing the short story “The fisherman and his soul”, by Oscar Wilde, under the perspective of the double. The text of Wilde recovers a theme whose roots lie in the mythological consciousness of ancient peoples: the shadow as personification or equivalent of the human soul. In this short story, the separation between body and shadow/soul will result in serious consequences for the protagonist: a young fisherman, belonging to the Jewish-Christian universe, who falls in love with a mermaid, a being coming from the pagan mythological universe.

A narrativa de Wilde retoma um tema cujas raízes se encontram na consciência mitológica de povos antigos: o da sombra enquanto personificação ou equivalente da alma humana.
