Resumo: This article aims to analyze the representations of fatherhood and mourning in the novel Crocodilo, by Javier Arancibia Contreras. Published in 2019, Crocodilo narrates the grieving processes of Ruy, a renowned journalist, after the death of his only son Pedro, by suicide. Abandoning his wife Marta, Pedro’s mother, and devastated by pain, Ruy starts an investigation that is both pragmatic and existential, in an attempt to understand his son’s motivations. In this search, carried out in the seven days after Pedro’s death, Ruy discovers himself and constantly reflects about his fatherhood, and deeply questions this role. Therefore, based on the theoretical assumptions of Sigmund Freud (2011), André Victor Machado (2019), Sócrates Nolasco (1993) and Maria Júlia Kovács (1992), among others, we intend to analyze the meanings of paternity experienced by Ruy, that manifests itself in the diegesis from the gradual elaboration of grief, by the narrator.
