Immigrant habit and mobility capital: Pierre Bourdieu's theory applied to migratory studies

Resumo: The present article presents the concepts of immigrant habitus and mobility capital, derived from the Theory of Practice proposed by Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002), as tools to understand the strategies of agents in migratory processes. Following the review and discussion of the origin and the theoretical-methodological foundations of the concepts of habitus and capital, we apply the concepts proposed in two recent researches: Brazilians in Quebec and Haitians in Brazil. Through the analysis of the statements and the strategies of the migrants in question, we verify to what extent the migratory projects are the fruits of a system of dispositions, the immigrant habitus, and how it becomes a set of specific properties, here called mobility capital. In conclusion, we have established that the voluntary decision to migrate and the processes of integration are interconnected and depend on the strength of the internalized habitus and the amount of accumulated capital.

Em seguida à revisão e discussão sobre a origem e os fundamentos teóricometodológicos dos conceitos de habitus e capital, aplicamos os conceitos propostos em duas pesquisas recentes: os brasileiros no Québec e os haitianos no Brasil. Através da análise de depoimentos e das estratégias dos migrantes em questão, verificamos em que medida os projetos migratórios são frutos de um sistema de disposições, o habitus imigrante, e como ele se transforma em um conjunto de propriedades específicas, aqui denominado de capital de mobilidade.
