English teaching in public schools: what parents, students and education professionals think/b>

Resumo: A survey on English Teachers and students’ opinions about English teaching/learning in public schools was developed in Paraná in the late seventies (Tílio, 1979). In 2001 two other ethnographic studies were carried out in two other tows in the same state, focusing students’, English Teachers’ and staff’s perceptions as concerns English teaching. The results of such studies are presented in this paper, and they reveal that as times goes by, many perceptions of teaching/learning English in public schools have remained unchanged.

The results of such studies are presented in this paper, and they reveal that as times goes by, many perceptions of teaching/learning English in public schools have remained unchanged.     No final da década de 70 foi realizado um trabalho de levantamento das opiniões de professores e alunos da rede pública do Estado do Paraná sobre o ensino de inglês (Tílio, 1979, 1985). Em  2001 dois outros trabalhos de cunho etnográfico forma realizados em duas cidades do mesmo estado, visando captar as percepções de alunos, professores, gestores escolares e pais de alunos a respeito do ensino da mesmo língua estrangeira. Neste artigo apresentaremos o resultado desses estudos, mostrando que a passagem do tempo parece não ter afetado as concepções sobre o ensino da língua inglesa no contexto da rede pública de ensino do Paraná.    Graduação em Letras Anglo-Portuguesas pela Faculdade Estadual de Filosofia Ciências e Letras de Cornélio Procópio (1982) e Mestrado em Estudos da Linguagem pela Universidade Estadual de Londrina (2002).
