Resumo: The present work brings reflections and argues if and how didactic proposals presented by an English language teaching material for middle-school favors the use of Active Learning Methodologies (ALM) and provides the development of autonomy and criticality. We understand that the teaching-learning process of the English language in contemporary times must be guided by principles that aim to develop, in addition to linguistic and intercultural knowledge, the critical capacity and autonomy of students in middle-school. The corpus for analysis consists of the English language textbook Way to English – for Brazilian Learners, 2nd edition, for the 9th grade of middle school, textbook selected for use in a public school in the countryside int the state of Paraná. The analysis shows that the aforementioned textbook provides themes, text genres and activities aligned with the use of ALM, rendering students engagement, autonomy and critic participation during classes.

The analysis shows that the aforementioned textbook provides themes, text genres and activities aligned with the use of ALM, rendering students engagement, autonomy and critic participation during classes.
