Resumo: | The aim of this work is to analyse the use of direct speech and conversational markers in forensic settings and their interactional functions in this kind of context. The theoretical framework of this research is based on the inter-relationship among the principles of Conversation Analysis and Forensic Linguistics, and the corpus is composed of excerpts which were taken from four public judicial hearings and transcribed according to Preti (2003). The findings show that the direct speech is an effective strategy for giving an appearance of reality, objectivity and veracity to the information provided by speakers. Conversational markers are multifunctional elements as they contribute to the organization and structuring of the spoken text as well as they function as summarizers, discursive approval seekers, verbal planners and mitigating devices. |
