Reading clubs: between sociability and literary criticism

Resumo: Introduction: Brazil has gained several reading clubs in recent years, requiring more attention from academia to understand this phenomenon already popularized in North America and Europe. Objective: To discuss the main criticisms of reading clubs regarding the profile of their goers, the selection of books, the types of reading, the modes of interaction (presential or virtual) and the role of the mediator. Methodology: Through a literature review, the arguments for and against reading clubs are compared, especially in relation to the dominant model in the United States and Europe. Results: The different types of existing clubs (for adults, TV, educational, virtual, etc.) are presented and their main characteristics are pointed out. Conclusions: A club becomes more effective and attractive when it can reconcile the pleasure with the literary study. Therefore, the presence of a mediator and some type of script for discussion is advocated.

Objetivo: Se pretende discutir las principales críticas a los clubes de lectura en relación con el perfil de sus participantes, a la selección de libros, a los tipos de lectura, a los modos de interacción (presencial o virtual) y al papel de mediador. Metodología: Por medio de una revisión de la literatura, se comparan los argumentos a favor y en contra a los clubes de lectura, especialmente en relación con el modelo dominante en los Estados Unidos y Europa. Resultados: Se presentan los diferentes tipos de clubes (para adultos, estudiantes, televisivo, virtual, etc.) y se apuntan sus principales características. Conclusiones: Un club se torna más eficaz y atractivo cuando se puede mezclar el placer con los estudios literarios. Para tanto, defiende la presencia de un mediador y algún tipo de guión para la discusión.Introdução: O Brasil tem ganhado diversos clubes de leitura nos últimos anos, exigindo uma maior atenção da academia para entender esse fenômeno já popularizado na América do Norte e Europa. Objetivo: Pretende-se discutir as principais críticas aos clubes de leitura em relação ao perfil dos seus frequentadores, à seleção de livros, aos tipos de leitura, aos modos de interação (presencial ou virtual) e ao papel do mediador. Metodologia: Por meio de uma revisão de literatura, comparam-se os argumentos prós e contrários aos clubes de leitura, especialmente em relação ao modelo dominante nos Estados Unidos e Europa. Resultados: Apresentam-se os diferentes tipos de clubes existentes (para adultos, escolar, televisivo, virtual, etc.) e apontam-se as suas principais características. Conclusões: Um clube torna-se mais eficaz e atraente quando consegue conciliar o prazer com o estudo literário.
