Modernity, science and memory through literature: the information in the narrative structure of Dracula, by Bram Stoker

Resumo: | Introduction: This paper interprets the novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker, identifying points of interest for the study of information. In addition, it is shown how the era described in the book prepares and announces what is called currently the Information Age. Objective: Analyze procedures of ordering and appropriation of information, as essential elements in the narrative structure of the novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker. Methodology: This is a bibliographical research, an effort of interpretation of the fictional work, questioning in essayistic and argumentative way about the relevance of the information in the book. Results: Through the examination of the representation of Library, the opposition between modernity (scientific) and the past (superstitious) and of the action of the characters, the book can be described as the presentation, in fictional basis, of a long and detailed process of organization and use of information. Conclusions: The representation of the complete cycle of information in the novel results in a composition illustrative of the wealth of meaning and the value that information takes on society, ever since the end of the 19th century. |

Metodología: Se trata de una investigación bibliográfica, un esfuerzo de interpretación a la obra ficcional, que pregunta de forma ensayística y argumentativa sobre la importancia de la información en el libro. Resultados: A través del examen de la representación de Biblioteca, la oposición entre modernidad (científica) y el pasado (supersticioso) y de la acción de los personajes, el libro puede ser descrito como la presentación en base de la ficción, de un largo y detallado proceso de organización y uso de información. Conclusiones: La representación del ciclo completo de la información en la novela tiene como resultado una composición ilustrativa de la riqueza de significado y valor que la información tiene en la sociedad, desde finales del siglo XIX.Introdução: Este trabalho interpreta o romance Drácula, de Bram Stoker, identificando pontos de interesse para os estudos da informação. Além disso, é mostrado como a época retratada no livro prepara e anuncia aquilo que se vem chamando atualmente de Era da Informação. Objetivo: Analisar procedimentos de ordenação e apropriação da informação, como elementos essenciais na estrutura narrativa do romance Drácula, de Bram Stoker. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, um esforço de interpretação da obra ficcional, questionando de forma ensaística e argumentativa sobre a relevância da informação no livro. Resultados: Por meio do exame da representação de Biblioteca, da oposição entre a modernidade (científica) e o passado (supersticioso) e da ação das personagens, o livro pode ser descrito como a apresentação em base fictícia, de um longo e detalhado processo de organização e uso de informações.
