Internalized racial oppression: a study with the Brazilian black population

Resumo: Internalized racial oppression refers to a process of internalization of negative racial stereotypes by black people, occurring as a self-attribution of a lower position in a supposed racial hierarchy. The aim of the present study was to translate the individualized Internalized Racial Oppression Scale for Black (IROS) into Brazilian Portuguese, developed in the United States, which assesses internalized racial oppression. It is also intended to identify the relevance of the theme in the Brazilian context. The study took place in two stages, in which the first was the translation itself, and the second, discussion with a focus group. The items were evaluated as being easy to understand, requiring few changes and resulting in a version translated into Brazilian Portuguese. From the discussion with the focus group, it was possible to identify the relevance of the theme to the Brazilian context. However, there are specificities to be considered in future studies for the adaptation and validation of the scale.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue traducir la Escala de opresión racial internalizada individualizada para negros (IROS) al portugués brasileño, desarrollada en los Estados Unidos, que evalúa la opresión racial internalizada. También se pretende identificar la relevancia del tema en el contexto brasileño. El estudio se desarrolló en dos etapas, en la que la primera fue la traducción en sí y la segunda, la discusión con un grupo focal. Los ítems fueron evaluados como fáciles de entender, requirieron pocos cambios y resultaron en una versión traducida al portugués brasileño. A partir de la discusión con el grupo focal, fue posible identificar la relevancia del tema para el contexto brasileño. Sin embargo, existen especificidades a considerar en futuros estudios para la adaptación y validación de la escala.A opressão racial internalizada refere-se a um processo de interiorização de estereótipos raciais negativos, por parte de pessoas negras, ocorrendo enquanto autoatribuição de uma posição inferior em uma suposta hierarquia racial. O objetivo do presente estudo foi traduzir ao Português Brasileiro a Internalized Racial Oppression Scale for Black individual (IROS), desenvolvida nos Estados Unidos, que avalia opressão racial internalizada. Também se pretende identificar a pertinência da temática no contexto brasileiro. O estudo ocorreu em duas etapas, em que a primeira foi a tradução propriamente dita e, a segunda, discussão com grupo focal. Os itens foram avaliados como sendo de fácil compreensão, necessitando poucas alterações e resultando em uma versão traduzida para o Português Brasileiro. A partir da discussão com o grupo focal foi possível identificar a pertinência da temática ao contexto brasileiro.
