Religious Education in Brazilian schools: historical alliances and conflicts

Resumo: | Analytical elements that relate processes of juridical regulation and school control on Religious Education are provided. The methodology is based on documentary and bibliographic research. Chronology extends from the colonial period to the 1930s and shows that alliances and clashes on Religious Education in Brazilian education history were nurtured from the start through the influence of the Catholic Church, ecclesiastical authorities, several institutions and intellectual defenders of religious values and principles. The principle aspects which foregrounded the basis for the setting and characterization of the controversy and forms of Brazilian school organization and the Religious Education may be perceived during the Brazilian Empire period up to the 1930s within the Republican Period. They were based on the emergence and consolidation of antagonism between religion and secularism, highlighting the role of the State in its cultural training and schooling of the population as one of the central factors of the debate. |

Este trabajo presenta elementos analíticos que relacionan procesos de reglamentación jurídica y de control de la escuela en cuanto a la Enseñanza Religiosa. La metodología está basada en investigación documental y bibliográfica. El arco cronológico comprende desde el período colonial hasta la década de 1930. Se demuestra que alianzas y disputas en cuanto a la Enseñanza Religiosa en la historia de la educación brasileña fueron nutridas desde los inicios debido a las influencias de la Iglesia Católica y de autoridades eclesiásticas, del mismo modo que de otras instituciones e intelectuales defensores de principios y valores religiosos. Y que durante el Imperio, así como en los años 1930 de la era republicana, pueden ser ubicados aspectos centrales y que constituyeron la base para la configuración y caracterización de las polémicas y de las formas de organización de la escuela brasileña en cuanto a la Enseñanza Religiosa, basados y orientados por la urgencia y consolidación de controversias entre religión y laicidad, siendo el papel del Estado, en la formación cultural y escolarización de la población, uno de los núcleos centrales del debate. Este trabalho apresenta elementos analíticos que relacionam processos de regulamentação jurídica e de controle da escola quanto ao Ensino Religioso. A metodologia está embasada em pesquisa documental e bibliográfica. O arco cronológico abrange desde o período colonial até a década de 1930. Mostra-se que alianças e embates quanto ao Ensino Religioso na história da educação brasileira foram nutridos desde os primórdios devido às influências da Igreja Católica e de autoridades eclesiásticas, assim como de outras instituições e intelectuais defensores de princípios e valores religiosos. E que durante o Império, bem como nos anos 1930 da era republicana, podem ser situados aspectos centrais e que constituíram a base para a configuração e caracterização das polêmicas e das formas de organização da escola brasileira quanto ao Ensino Religioso, embasados e orientados pela emergência e consolidação de controvérsias entre religião e laicidade, sendo o papel do Estado, na formação cultural e escolarização da população, um dos núcleos centrais do debate.
