Education reforms in the School of Pharmacy of Ouro Preto (1890-1911)

Resumo: This research is aimed at understanding the repertory of ideas around the first education reforms within the Republican Period: Benjamin Constant (1890), Epitácio Pessoa (1901), and Rivadávia Côrrea (1911); the consequences these reforms had on an important undergraduate institution in the history of Brazil, the School of Pharmacy in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, and the reactions from the pharmaceutical class in face of the educational vicissitudes in the First Republic. In order to carry out this research, it was necessary to appraise studies from the Historiography of Education, as well as those of the New Political History, and the theoretical support from the concept of Republican Political Culture. Regarding documentation, we performed an investigation of the collection of laws and decrees of the education reforms, the President’s reports of the State of Minas Gerais, besides other documents found within the School’s Archive, composed of regulations, enrollment books, and individual documents. Analyzing the entrance exams required to study at the School of Pharmacy and the courses offered by this institution, it is noted that the Ouro Preto’s pharmaceutical group composed of teachers, students, and principals, was divided between a wish for change and resistance to the reforms implemented at the beginning of the republican period.

Para el desarrollo de la investigación, fue necesaria la apreciación de los estudios de la Historiografía de la Educación, así como de la Nueva Historia Política, y el amparo teórico en el concepto de Cultura Política Republicana. En cuanto a la documentación, se investigó la colección de leyes y decretos de las reformas educativas, los informes de Presidente del Estado de Minas Gerais, además de los documentos encontrados en el Archivo de la propia escuela, compuesto por reglamentos, libros de matrículas y documentos sueltos. Al analizar los cambios ocurridos tanto en los exámenes de admisión exigidos para el ingreso en la Escuela de Farmacia como en las disciplinas ofrecidas por esta institución, se constata que el grupo farmacéutico de Ouro Preto, compuesto por profesores, alumnos y directores, se vio entre el deseo de cambio y la resistencia a las reformas implantadas al inicio del período republicano.O objetivo desta pesquisa é compreender o ideário em torno das primeiras reformas educacionais do período republicano: reformas Benjamin Constant (1890), Epitácio Pessoa (1901) e Rivadávia Corrêa (1911); as consequências que essas reformas representaram para uma importante instituição de ensino superior da história do Brasil, a Escola de Farmácia de Ouro Preto, e as reações da classe farmacêutica de Ouro Preto diante das vicissitudes educacionais da Primeira República. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, foi necessária a apreciação dos estudos da Historiografia da Educação, bem como da Nova História Política, e o amparo teórico no conceito de Cultura Política Republicana. Em relação à documentação, foi investigada a coleção de leis e decretos das reformas educacionais, os relatórios de Presidente do Estado de Minas Gerais, além dos documentos encontrados no Arquivo da própria escola, composto por regulamentos, livros de matrículas e documentos avulsos.
