Resumo: The aim of this research was to characterize the phenological performance, and determine the thermal demand of the ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ and ‘Tannat’ grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivated in Northern Paraná. The experimental area was established in a commercial vineyard owned by Vinícola Intervin®, located in the city of Maringá state of Paraná Southern Brazil. The vineyards were established in July, 2000, using the ‘IAC 766 Campinas’ as a rootstock. For each variety, 20 plants previously marked were used, all cultivated in pergola system, with 4.0 x 1.5 m spacing. The plants phenology evaluation began at the production pruning of 2004, compared to duration, in days, of each subperiod: pruning to bud swell; pruning to beginning of shot growth; pruning to visible cluster; pruning to flowering; pruning to early ripening and pruning to harvest. The thermal requirement was calculated using degree-days sum from pruning to harvest, and also for each subperiod, considering two base temperatures (10 and 12ºC), being chosen those with lowest standard error. Results show that subperiods duration for ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grape was 9; 13; 17; 40; 98 and 132 days, and for ‘Tannat’ grape was 13; 15; 19; 41; 99 and 139 days, respectively. The base temperature of 10ºC was the most adequate for calculating the thermal requirement. To complete the cycle, the demand was 1,295.8 degree-days for ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ and 1,375.5 degree-days for ‘Tannat’.
