Resumo: With the purpose of studying the effect of coverage applied nitrogen in different phenological stages of common bean crops, two different experimental periods were implanted in the autumn-winter season, 2001, in Selvíria- state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. A completely randomized block design with four replications was used. Treatments resulted from factorial combination of the rates 40 and 80 kg ha-1 of N in coverage application in 13 and 11 periods of the vegetative development, to the first and second sowing, respectively. The results showed a decrease of the bean grain yield in the late sowing of June, compared with the sowing of April. Significant differences were observed with the application of 80 kg ha-1 in conditions of earlier sowing. The period of sowing, due the climatic conditions, affects the grain yield, and the nitrogen application should be executed until the 7th trifoliolate leaf, totally open in the principal stem.
