Summary: The improvement in soil condition associated with nitrogen supply is very important to increase crop yield. The research was carried in Selviria county, state of Mato Grossso do Sul, Brazil. A randomized block design was with treatments consisting of a combination of soil management (heavy disk + leveling disk, moldboard plow + leveling disk, and no-till) and nitrogen application time (100 kg ha-1) at sowing and/or side-dressed at the 6-7 leaves stage, using urea as source, with 4 replications. Nitrogen influenced grain yield with increment of 29.4% (2001/02) and 47.4% (2002/03) in relation to control. There was no significant difference among the different periods of nitrogen application. The treatments produced higher yield of corn in relation to soil management using plowing disk or moldboard plow.

A pesquisa foi conduzida no município de Selvíria, Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com os tratamentos constituídos pela combinação de manejo do solo (grade pesada + grade niveladora, arado de aiveca + grade niveladora e plantio direto) e aplicação de nitrogênio (100 kg ha-1) na semeadura e/ou em cobertura na fase de 6-7 folhas, utilizando como fonte a uréia, com 4 repetições. Para a aplicação de N, houve efeito significativo somente em relação à testemunha em que, na média, o incremento de produtividade foi de 29,4% (2001/02) e de 47,4% (2002/03). Não houve diferença entre a aplicação realizada totalmente na semeadura ou em cobertura, ou ainda, entre as aplicações parceladas.
