Resumo: This study aims to critically analyze some functions assigned to the School Physical Education during the Brazilian military dictatorship. Some books considered relevant by the academic context of Physical Education stated that the programs of Physical Education in school were under the submission of dictatorial government interests. Based on this statement, Physical Education in school would be organized to increase work capacity, to develop competitive athletes and also to use the sport as a politic strategy. However, these historiography versions present limits that could be contested when considering empiric data. It was verified that teachers had an active engage in public policies regarding Physical Education in school and also worked with heterogeneous pedagogical practices, which were not necessarily linked to the military government’s interests. It is concluded that this object of study might be considered in a deeper and more complex perspective.

Algumas obras de grande visibilidade no contexto acadêmico da Educação Física apresentam consenso sobre uma suposta consonância entre a Educação Física escolar e os interesses do governo ditatorial-militar. Segundo essas obras, a Educação Física escolar estaria a serviço da melhora da produtividade para o trabalho, da formação de atletas de alto rendimento e do uso político do esporte. Contudo, observou-se que tais versões historiográficas apresentam limites, principalmente em função de dados que demonstram a participação de professores de Educação Física na elaboração das políticas públicas gestadas para a área e a presença de práticas pedagógicas heterogêneas, que não necessariamente estavam alinhadas com os interesses do regime ditatorial-militar.
