What public health in physical education for? Reflections of a professional involved in the area for twenty years

Resumo: Based on a globa1 observation of the current evolution of identity and the characteristics of the Physica1 Education area as well, a reflection on the maintenance of the PubIic Hea1th was carried out. Therefore, the question is: ‘what are the pragmatic necessities of specialists in public sanitation and health to work in Physical Education?’ Eventual answers are raised, by using some PhD projects developed by members of Unicamp Public Health/EpidemioIogy & PhysicaI Activity Group, as elements of applications. The first contribution is identified in the possible use of epidemiological paradigm to produce knowledge by using resources and techniques of epidemiological action and thought. Limitations and benefits of Physical Activity on Health are a1so considered, besides managing with the specificities of Health Education. At last, Health conception as a public right is emphasized.

At last, Health conception as a public right is emphasized.A partir da observação global da evolução recente da identidade e características da área da Educação Física em nosso meio, faz-se aqui uma reflexão sobre o sentido da manutenção da saúde coletiva em seu interior. A questão que se coloca é, portanto, quais as finalidades concretas da atuação profissional de sanitaristas em Educação Física. Exploram-se algumas possíveis respostas, recorrendo-se, como elementos de aplicação, a projetos de doutorado desenvolvidos por componentes do Grupo de Saúde Coletiva/Epidemiologia e Atividade Física da Unicamp. Identifica-se a primeira contribuição na disponibilização dos paradigmas epidemiológicos da produção do conhecimento, o que implica no uso dos recursos e técnicas do agir e do pensar epidemiológico.
