Resumo: This research was based on a descriptive approach and had as general purpose to verify the obesity prevalence of children and adolescents attending the fundamental school in Cianorte city. A total of 1178 students were chosen at random, reaching 30 % of the total students from each school. A Plenna scale, a tape measure and a skin fold caliper (Cescorf) were used for collecting the data (weight, height, as well as the triceps and underscapular skinfolds measurements). These data allowed us to conclude that 24.3% of the children and adolescents can be classified as obese subjects. This occurs due to both their nutrition of poor quality and the time they spend in front of the TV every day.

This occurs due to both their nutrition of poor quality and the time they spend in front of the TV every day.O propósito do presente estudo foi verificar a prevalência de obesidade e sobrepeso apresentada por crianças e adolescentes do ensino fundamental de 5ª a 8ª séries da zona urbana, do município de Cianorte-PR. Caracterizou-se como sendo do tipo descritivo. Fizeram parte da amostra 30% dos alunos de cada escola, num total de 1178 alunos, escolhidos de forma aleatória. Como instrumento para a obtenção dos dados referentes aos indicadores de obesidade (peso, estatura e somatório de dobras cutâneas do tríceps e subescapular) utilizou-se uma balança Plenna, com precisão de 100g, fita métrica e compasso de dobras cutâneas (Cescorf Científico).
