Intercultural learning: perception of Argentine students from an at home experience of curricular internationalization in pandemic times

Resumo: We focused on an at home internationalization project developed by the Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL) from Argentina. We aimed to analyze intercultural learning from the perception of Argentine students who participated in mixed groups with Brazilian students from the Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri (UFVJM), in a curricular exchange experience in the second semester of 2020, developed remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We adopted a qualitative approach based on the Phenomenology methodology, organizing the data collected from survey by the following topics: expectations, challenges and learning. We found that the students expect, perceive and evaluate working in mixed groups in an open way, taking alterity as an invitation. Even in face of difficulties as language and time organization, students positively evaluated the experience, listing intercultural learning such as empathy, listening and respect. Our findings shows that the experience of mixed groups materialized the central ideals of this project: openness, relationship and respect for the other in an intercultural experience.

Nuestro objetivo es analizar los aprendizajes interculturales a partir de las percepciones de estudiantes argentinos que participaron en grupos mixtos con estudiantes brasileños de la Universidad Federal de Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri (UFVJM) en una experiencia de intercambio curricular en el semestre 2020/2, desarrollada de forma remota debido a la pandemia Covid-19. Adoptamos un enfoque cualitativo basado en la Fenomenología, organizando los datos que fueron recolectados a través de un cuestionario, en los ejes temáticos: expectativas, desafíos y aprendizajes. Comprendemos que los estudiantes esperan, perciben y evalúan el trabajo en grupos mixtos en una posición de apertura, tomando a la alteridad como una invitación. Incluso ante las dificultades del lenguaje y la organización del tiempo, los estudiantes valoran positivamente la experiencia, enumerando aprendizajes interculturales como la empatía, la escucha, el respeto. Concluimos que la experiencia de los grupos mixtos materializó los ideales centrales de este proyecto: apertura, relación y respeto hacia el otro en una experiencia intercultural.Focamos num projeto de internacionalização em casa desenvolvido pela Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL - Argentina). Objetivamos analisar aprendizagens interculturais a partir das percepções de estudantes argentinos que participaram de grupos mistos com estudantes brasileiros da Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri (UFVJM) numa experiência de intercâmbio curricular no semestre 2020/2, desenvolvido de forma remota em função da pandemia Covid-19. Adotamos abordagem qualitativa baseada na Fenomenologia, organizando dados coletados por meio de questionário nos eixos temáticos: expectativas, desafios e aprendizados. Compreendemos como os estudantes esperam, percebem e avaliam o trabalho em grupos mistos numa posição de abertura, tomando a alteridade como convidativa. Mesmo diante das dificuldades do idioma e da organização do tempo, os estudantes avaliam positivamente a experiência, elencando aprendizados interculturais como empatia, escuta, respeito.
