THE INFLUENCE OF SHINTO IN THE JAPANESE NATIONAL FORMATION PROCESS

The purpose of this article is to analyse how Shinto influenced the Japanese national formation process and how it is still present in Japanese national and international politics despite the separation that occurred after the Second World War. In order to achieve this objective, a very extensive bibliographic research was carried out using both Western and Japanese authors in order to approach the research object from different conceptual points of view. It was shown that not only was the Shinto religion used as a strategic tool to create a united and strong Japan in its internal and external dimensions, when Shinto became the official religion of the Japanese Empire, but that even with the separation of State and Religion, presentsince its 1947 Constitution, Shinto remains alive both in the life of the Japanese people and in the current Japanese government, influencing the national and international conduct of the country with its religiouspolitical principles.
