Overview of the history of Technology in Education in the pre-digital era: the slow technological evolution in Portuguese schools from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of computerized education

Resumo: | Currently, the discussion on the use of Technologies in educational environments has been increasingly present in studies on Education. The use of Technologies in Education is not a recent reality, and the evolution of technological resources has changed in a way that has significantly changed the act of teaching, and Technology is increasingly being recognized, too, as a means of enhancing learning. This work, in close connection between History and Education, aims to present a systematic literature review from a qualitative analysis of journals of the main Portuguese Lyceums on the use of Technology in the educational Portuguese context from early 20th century to the beginning of computerized teaching, framed in an international view, in a cohesive perspective of the use and, above all, of the way of appropriation of technology in Portuguese schools. The main conclusions of this study suggest an introduction of Technology in Portuguese schools that follows its dissemination in other countries, in particular the USA, suggesting, however, a slow dissemination, with an essentially sporadic use, fruit of the scarcity of resources and little focus on teacher training, giving the use of Technology in school a more irregular and playful character rather than an effective integration in pedagogical practices in order to promote the quality of learning. Evolution of educational technology.Actualmente, el debate sobre el uso de las tecnologías en entornos educativos ha estado cada vez más presente en los estudios sobre Educación. El uso de las Tecnologías en la Educación no es una realidad reciente, y la evolución de los recursos tecnológicos ha cambiado de una manera que ha cambiado significativamente el acto de la enseñanza, y la Tecnología está siendo cada vez más reconocida, también, como un medio para mejorar el aprendizaje. Este trabajo, en estrecha relación entre Historia y Educación, tiene como objetivo presentar una revisión sistemática de la literatura desde un análisis cualitativo de revistas de los principales Liceos Portugueses sobre el uso de la Tecnología en el contexto educativo portugués desde principios del siglo XX hasta el comienzo de la enseñanza informatizada, enmarcada en una visión internacional, en una perspectiva cohesiva del uso y, sobre todo, de la forma de apropiación de la tecnología en las escuelas portuguesas. Las principales conclusiones de este estudio sugieren una introducción de la Tecnología en las escuelas portuguesas que sigue a su difusión en otros países, en particular en los Estados Unidos, sugiriendo, sin embargo, una lenta difusión, con un uso esencialmente esporádico, fruto de la escasez de recursos y poco enfoque en la formación del profesorado, dando al uso de la Tecnología en la escuela un carácter más irregular y lúdico en lugar de una integración efectiva en las prácticas pedagógicas con el fin de promover la calidad del aprendizaje. Evolución de la tecnología educativa.Atualmente, o discurso sobre o uso de Tecnologias em ambientes educativos tem estado cada vez mais presente nos estudos sobre Educação. O uso de Tecnologias na Educação não é uma realidade recente, e a evolução dos meios tecnológicos veio modificar de forma significativa o ato de ensinar, sendo a Tecnologia cada vez mais reconhecida, também, como potenciadora das aprendizagens. Este trabalho, em estreita ligação entre História e Educação, visa apresentar uma revisão sistemática da literatura a partir da análise qualitativa de periódicos dos principais Liceus portugueses sobre o uso da Tecnologia no contexto educativo português desde o dealbar do século XX até ao início do ensino computorizado, enquadrado numa visão internacional, numa perspetiva coetânea do uso e da forma de apropriação da Tecnologia nas escolas portuguesas. As principais conclusões deste estudo indiciam uma introdução da Tecnologia na escola portuguesa que segue a disseminação concretizada noutros países, em particular nos EUA, porém, sugerindo uma lenta difusão, com uma utilização essencialmente esporádica, fruto da escassez de recursos e pouca aposta em formação docente, conferindo ao uso da Tecnologia na escola um caráter mais irregular e lúdico do que verdadeiramente integrado em práticas pedagógicas com vista a promover a qualidade das aprendizagens.
