Resumo: This paper presents the results of research on educational policies in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The research assessed the impact of the provision of vacancies in Basic Education from 2001 to 2006. The effectiveness of such public action in education was one of the aims of the research. The study used official databases about the population, number of students who enroll, stay in schools and finish their studies. The main conclusions of the study show that in the state of Paraná, Basic Education policies have not been effective as social demands are not completely achieved; for example, there is not enough provision of vacancies, there is a lack of quality conditions and the actions implemented are not articulated with social needs.   Keywords: Educational Policies. Educational provision. Paraná State.Este artigo apresenta os resultados de pesquisa sobre as políticas educacionais no Estado do Paraná. A pesquisa avaliou o impacto da oferta de vagas na Educação Básica entre os anos de 2001 e 2006, procurando observar a efetividade da ação pública na educação. O estudo utiliza dados oficiais de população, matrículas e permanência/conclusão escolar. Suas principais conclusões mostram que no Estado do Paraná as políticas para a Educação Básica não são efetivas no atendimento às demandas sociais, seja pela ausência de vagas, pela falta de condições de qualidade ou pela implementação de ações movidas por concepções um tanto distantes da ideia de justiça social, ou seja, desarticuladas das necessidades sociais.   Palavras-chave: Políticas educacionais.
