Resumo: Afro-Brazilian religions are important religious and cultural manifestations that allows the afro-descendant to see and build himself as a subject in a community. Umbanda, more Brazilian and mixed, is classified by some as “whitish”, but is still a way for the black subject to manifest his origin, an origin that for centuries was tried to erase, after the diaspora of coming to Brazil. Based on references from Cultural Studies, the emergence of the Templo Escolas, particularly the Templo Escola Beira Mar, in a city like Santa Cruz do Sul - RS, is studied as quite significant, as a way of democratizing and spreading the Umbanda religion. The study was bibliographically based, also consisting of interviews and unsystematic observation.  The movement, in addition to disseminating knowledge, brings visibility to historically marginalized segments of society, that is, blacks, indigenous and the poor in general.

La Umbanda, más brasileña y mestiza, aunque algunos la clasifiquen como “blanca”, sigue siendo una forma para que los negros expresen su origen, un origen que durante siglos se intentó borrar, después de la llegada de la diáspora a Brasil. A partir de referencias de Estudios Culturales, se estudia como muy significativa la aparición del Templo Escola, particularmente del Templo Escola Beira Mar, en una ciudad como Santa Cruz do Sul - RS, como forma de democratización y difusión de la religión Umbanda. El estudio tuvo una base bibliográfica, consistiendo también en entrevistas y observación no sistemática.  El movimiento, además de difundir conocimientos, brinda visibilidad a segmentos históricamente marginados de la sociedad, es decir, los negros, los indígenas y los pobres en general.As religiões afro-brasileiras são importantes manifestações religiosas e culturais que permitem ao afrodescendente se enxergar e se construir enquanto sujeito em uma comunidade. A Umbanda, mais abrasileirada e mista, mesmo sendo classificada por alguns como “esbranquiçada”, ainda assim é uma maneira de o sujeito negro manifestar a sua origem, uma origem que por séculos tentou-se apagar, após a diáspora da vinda ao Brasil. A partir e referências dos Estudos Culturais, estuda-se o surgimento dos Templo Escolas, particularmente o Templo Escola Beira Mar, em uma cidade como Santa Cruz do Sul - RS, como bastante significativo, como forma de democratizar e de difundir a religião Umbanda. O estudo teve base bibliográfica, composto ainda por entrevista e observação assistemática.
