From pre-service to in-service education in English teaching: what do teachers in Serra Talhada-PE report?

Resumo: This article presents and discusses data collected for the scientific initiation project “The education of English teachers and its implications for the public schools in Serra Talhada”, developed from 2021 to 2022. The aim of the study was to collect in-service educational demands of city school English teachers working in Serra Talhada-PE based on their professional profiles. First, we identified schools that offer English language teaching in basic education. Then, we interviewed nine participant-teachers through a structured interview and analyzed their answers interpretatively in the light of the literature review. The interviews were firstly conducted online, due to the pandemic, but they turned to in-person modality afterwards. It was possible to verify their self-perceptions on fluency and their difficulties in articulating their knowledge about methods and teaching-learning practices.

El objetivo del estudio fue investigar las demandas de los profesores de inglés de las escuelas municipales y estatales que trabajan en Serra Talhada-PE en función de sus perfiles de formación profesional. Identificamos primeramente las escuelas que ofrecían inglés, entrevistamos a los docentes a través de una entrevista estructurada y analizamos sus respuestas. Las entrevistas con nueve docentes se han realizado primero en línea, ya que algunas escuelas aún estaban regresando de la pandemia, pero luego fueron realizadas en la modalidad presencial. El análisis de las entrevistas siguió a una lectura interpretativa y una discusión a la luz de la literatura. Fue posible verificar sus autopercepciones de fluidez en el idioma y sus dificultades para articular sus conocimientos acerca de métodos y prácticas de enseñanza-aprendizaje.Este artigo apresenta e discute alguns dos dados coletados na realização do projeto de iniciação científica “A Formação dos Professores de Inglês e suas Implicações para o Ensino Público de Serra Talhada” desenvolvido entre 2021 e 2022. O objetivo geral do estudo era fazer um levantamento de demandas de formação dos professores municipais de língua inglesa atuando no referido município a partir do perfil de formação desses professores. Fizemos o levantamento das escolas municipais que ofereciam ensino de língua inglesa no Ensino Fundamental II, entrevistamos os professores por meio de uma entrevista estruturada e analisamos suas respostas. As entrevistas foram realizadas com nove professores inicialmente de forma online, em decorrência da modalidade híbrida de funcionamento das escolas à época, passando para a modalidade presencial posteriormente. A análise das entrevistas seguiu a leitura interpretativa e discussão à luz da literatura.
