Tensions between emancipation and authoritarianism: contributions of Paulo Freire

Resumo: The political-pedagogical contributions of Paulo Freire are undeniable. Why is he then a thinker so contested by some segments of Brazilian society? The rise of an authoritarian thought in Brazil in the last few years puts under suspicion any pedagogical perspective that defines itself as emancipatory and formative of an emancipated individual, one who is capable of making decisions and is predisposed to dialogue with different interlocutors. The present paper focuses on the analysis of the emancipatory potential of freirian pedagogy, reason for which he is contested in such a violent way by defenders of authoritarian ideas. Looking to account for this problematic, the paper begins with a problematization of the challenges faced by an emancipatory pedagogy in the present context; makes a brief diagnosis about the authoritarian dimension in the contemporary society; recuperates fundamental elements in the emancipatory pedagogy of Freire and concludes reaffirming the thesis about the necessity of giving more visibility to freirian ideals in the formation of a subject who is critical, creative and emancipated, especially in the context of school education.

El surgimiento de un pensamiento autoritario en Brasil en los últimos años pone bajo sospecha cualquier perspectiva pedagógica que se define a sí misma como emancipadora y formadora de un sujeto emancipado, capaz de tomar decisiones y predispuesta al diálogo con diferentes interlocutores. Este artículo se centra en el análisis del potencial emancipador de la pedagogía de Freire, por lo que es tan violentamente disputada por los defensores de los ideales autoritarios. Buscando tratar este problema, el artículo comienza con un cuestionamiento sobre los desafíos de una pedagogía emancipadora en el contexto actual; hace un breve diagnóstico de la dimensión autoritaria de la sociedad contemporánea; recupera elementos fundamentales de la dimensión emancipadora de la pedagogía de Freire y concluye reafirmando la tesis de la necesidad de dar mayor visibilidad a los ideales de Freire en la formación de un tema crítico, creativo y emancipado, especialmente en el contexto de la educación escolar.As contribuições político-pedagógicas de Paulo Freire são inegáveis. Por que então ele é um pensador tão execrado por alguns segmentos da sociedade brasileira? O aflorar de um pensamento autoritário no Brasil nos últimos anos coloca sob suspeita toda e qualquer perspectiva pedagógica que se defina como emancipadora e formadora de um sujeito emancipado, capaz de tomar decisões e predisposto a dialogar com diferentes interlocutores. O presente artigo foca-se na análise do potencial emancipador da pedagogia freireana, razão pela qual é contestado de forma tão violenta por defensores de ideais autoritários.
